The absence of a rural hospital in Khadakwasla and Panshet areas is forcing almost 90,000 residents to seek medical treatment in private hospitals in Pune or go to Sassoon Hospital in case of emergencies.

Villagers residing on the banks of the Mutha River come to the hospitals with cases of snake bite and delivery-related complications. Khadakwasla area falls in the constituency of prominent NCP leader, Supriya Sule.

The villagers, along with NGOs Rachna and Sathi-Cehat (Support for Advocacy and Training to Health Initiatives-Centre for Enquiry Into Health and Allied Themes), have requested the civil surgeon of Aundh Hospital and the deputy director health services to start a rural hospital as soon as possible.

“We have been demanding a hospital in the area for the last five years now, but nothing has been done so far,” said Devidas Thakar, a member of Rachna from Panshet.

Sarpanch of Kadve village, Ramesh Shirke said, “There are many emergency cases like snake bites or accidents. In the absence of a rural hospital, we are forced to take the patient to private hospitals or to Sassoon Hospital. Most of us belong to BPL (below poverty line) category and medication is delayed most of the time due to high cost of treatment in private hospitals, which leads to complications.”

Shripad Konde, head of Rachna, told DNA that recently a jansunvai (people’s court) was organised at Nasrapur where civil surgeon, Dr M Nagare, was called. The villagers, along with Shirke, protested in front of health officials and threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike if their demand was not met.

When contacted, Nagare said, “It is true that there is no rural hospital in that area to cater to a population of almost 90,000, but a letter to the state health officials in this regard has been already sent a few days ago. Cases like snake bite, caesarean section and accidents need emergency treatment. The villagers have also demanded medical facilities, which will also be made available after the hospital comes up.”
