One was a crime of passion, the other, allegedly premeditated. Karan Kakkar’s murder bears an eerie resemblance to that of TV channel producer Neeraj Grover in 2008.

Murder weapon
Ex-navy officer Emile Jerome gave the dull bread knife a whole new ghastly moniker when he pushed it into Neeraj Grover, a TV channel producer, in the early hours of May 7, 2008, after he found him naked in girlfriend Maria Susairaj’s apartment at Malad. Jerome and Susairaj hid the weapon in the jungles of Manor in Thane (rural) and burnt parts of his body.

The weapon used to murder Karan Kakkar is yet to be recovered, but remains of his body were found at Kumbharli Ghat near Satara

Getting rid of the body
Grover’s body was chopped into pieces and packed in bags. Kakkar suffered the same fate at the hands of gangster aides Vijay Palande, Dhananjay Shinde and Manoj Gajkosh in his toilet (right)

The getaway
Susairaj had used a vehicle of a friend to ferry Grover’s body to an isolated place at Manor. DNA samples taken from the vehicle confirmed this.

A BMW car was used to dump Kakkar’s body at Kumbharli Ghat. DNA samples from the car help gather key evidence against the accused

Who’s watching
The watchman of the building (right) where Susairaj lived became a prime witness in the Grover murder case. He had seen the Kannada actress and Jerome placing bags in the trunk of the getaway vehicle

The watchman of Oberoi Springs, where Kakkar stayed, has told the police that he had seen the suspects take out the vehicle the day the wannabe producer went missing
