Suggesting that each competition of Malhar, the annual festival of the St Xavier’s College, be designed to focus attention on transforming India into a developed nation, APJ Abdul Kalam, former president of India, said that the conclave, being held for the first time at the festival, was a good initiative.

“It will act as a bridge for innovative ideas and will provide a platform for bringing together the youth,” said Kalam, while formally inaugurating the conclave.

Kalam spoke of his vision for the nation and the role the youth — if properly directed and controlled — can have on India’s progress and prosperity. “The ignited mind of the youth is the most powerful resource on earth and it is you, the students, who can make a difference,” said Kalam.

He made the students take a ten-point oath, which included aspects such as having a goal and working hard to achieve it; working and succeeding with integrity and always trying to save or better someone’s life without any discrimination.

“When I visualise students, I see in them great teachers, principals, social workers, judges, administrators and political leaders. St Xavier’s College will develop leaders who will be active leaders in transforming India,” he said.

The conclave which will be held on the first day of the festival on August 14, is an attempt to bring together eminent speakers and students to participate in discussions based on varied subjects. “The conclave hopes to give the youth a platform to voice their opinions and beliefs and think seriously about issues affecting the nation. It’ll offer an opportunity to students to connect and interact with prominent minds,” said Preksha Sood, who is heading the conclave.

There will be two keynote talks  — Young India in Tomorrow’s World and Sanctity of Human Life.

The conclave will also feature discussions, and debates will be focussed on issues such as media, environment, development goals, faith, science and rationalism.
