Recovering in a Nalasopara hospital from stab wounds, 29-year-old Shilpa Pabhrekar will never forget the chilling threat issued to her a week ago.
“Marry me or I will kill you before Valentine’s Day.”
In her statement to the Nalasopara police, Shilpa said that Deepak Gurav, 37, worked at her sister’s hotel in Nalasopara about seven years ago. Ever since, he had his eye on Shilpa and even professed love for her several times. Shilpa, however, snubbed him consistently. When he became a nuisance, he was sacked and joined a plumbing job in the city.
A week previously, Gurav bumped into Shilpa and uttered his threat, which she ignored.
To make good on his promise, Gurav followed Shilpa on Tuesday from her place and intercepted her near the flyover at Nalasopara railway station. Before anyone could anticipate what was about to happen, he whipped out a knife and stabbed her a few times. Hearing her screams, a few passersby rushed to help, overpowered Gurav and handed him over to the police. Shilpa was taken to the nearest hospital, where she has been declared out of danger.
Nalasopara police have booked Gurav for attempted murder under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code.
“He told us that he would have been lucky if the police would have shot him instead of arresting him alive,” said Mukund Mahajan, senior inspector with the Nalasopara police station.
Deepak Devraj, deputy superintendent of police for the Vasai division, said “Shilpa should have approached us when Deepak first threatened to kill her. This attack is the result of a one-sided love affair, and we will make a watertight case against him to bring him to justice.”
