A disparity in their social status and incomes provoked a man to kill his brother-in-law and later throw his body on the railway tracks near Kasara to make it seem he was killed in a railway accident.

“Vinod Sonawane, 30, and his two associates —Sainath Kene, 28, and Shailesh Talape, 26 —  were booked under Sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 34 (common intention) o fthe IPC for killing Manish Shinde, 25,” said AR Jagtap, senior police inspector of Kalyan railway police station.

The investigation revealed that Vinod Sonawane and Manish Shinde were brothers-in-law. Thane resident Shinde ran a small travel business and also drove a tourist vehicle. Meanwhile, Sonawane, a resident of Mulund, works at his elder brother’s mobile service providing franchise and reportedly earns less than Shinde. As a result, his mother-in-law and other family members would show more respect to Shinde.  As an act of revenge, Sonawane decided to kill his younger brother-in-law.

On June 13, Sonawane invited Shinde to an evening in Kasara along with his friends, Kene and Talape. At around 10.30pm, Shinde got up to leave the group who had settled at a spot in a jungle between Kasara and Umarmali stations to drink and eat.

Sonawane whipped out a knife and stabbed Shinde multiple times as Kene and Talape held him down. The trio then left Shinde’s body on the railway tracks, barely 300 feet away from the spot of the murder and fled.

The next morning, Shinde’s body was discovered by the Government Railway Police.
