Survey of privately owned land around Mumbai airport in Jari Mari has been stopped following opposition from residents. On February 23, the Mumbai suburban collector issued a letter to the local corporator and residents’ associations saying that his office has stopped surveying private land.

Just under half of the 276 acres of land planned for expansion use is airport authority-owned land encroached by slums. The rest is owned by the state government, municipal corporation and private groups. Resident groups are opposing acquisition plans of land not owned by the airport authority.

Around 20 acres of slums in Jari Mari, Kurla has been identified for the airport project. Of this, half belong to the airport authority and the rest is owned by the collector (state government) and private parties like the Wadia Trust. Around 1,000 families live on privately owned plots.

Local corporator S Annamalai said, “We are also opposed to the survey of land owned by the collector. While they have stopped surveying privately owned land, we also want them to stop their survey of collector land.”

On Friday, slum dwellers stopped surveyors from working on collector land. SS Matondkar of the residents’ group Jari Mari Rahivasi Sangh said, “There is no clarity on what they plan to do with the slums on private land. We want to be rehabilitated in the same place with facilities like schools.”

Mumbai suburban district collector Nirmalkumar Deshmukh said, “There is no question of carrying out a survey on private land. Earlier, there was no clear demarcation between private and airport land. Now that we have made the demarcation, we will not survey private plots. The survey will continue on airport and collector land.”

Deshmukh’s letter also asked the residents to cancel their plans for a hunger strike that was supposed to start on February 24.
