Japanese eye Pune to boost trade ties

A 14-member delegation from Okayama Prefecture, Japan, visited the city to study investment opportunities and possible trade relation between Okayama and Pune.

A 14-member delegation from Okayama Prefecture, Japan, visited the city to study investment opportunities and possible trade relation between Okayama and Pune. The group also visited the PuLa Deshpande Park on Sinhagad Road.

The visit is to commemorate five years of formal relations between Pune and Okayama. The garden in the park is called the Okayama Friendship Garden and is based on the famous Korakuen garden of Okayama in Japan. The history of
Korakuen garden can be traced back 300 years.

“Technical expertise for the Okayama Friendship Garden was given by a team from Okayama for free as a token of friendship between Pune and Okayama. The delegation today visited the garden and appreciated the maintenance of it by the authorities here,” said Amod Dev, secretary of the Association of Friends of Japan, established 20 years ago.

Hidetoshi Sho, chief senior manager for industry planning division in the department of industry and labour, government of Okayama Prefecture, said the delegation would carry out a survey on investment opportunities in Pune and possible potential of its companies to start their operation in Okayama.

“One of the key sectors in Okayama that is flourishing is automobile industry and companies like Mitsubishi have its presence there. We visited Tata Motors today and were impressed by the complete automated production line. We will pass on our observation to the industries in Okayama, so that they can have trade relations with Pune,” he said.

The delegation is also looking at engineering, biotechnology and life sciences, information technology and food processing, among other sectors. Five companies based in Okayama are located in India and one is in Pune. There are around 350 multinational companies that are based out of Okayama and operating in sectors like automobile, chemical, steel and electronics. The team will also visit Mumbai.
