Normalcy returned to Ratnagiri today, where tension had prevailed for the last two days following the death of a protester in police firing near Jaitapur, the site of the proposed 9,900 MW nuclear power plant.

No untoward incidents were reported elsewhere in the district too, police said.

The opposition to the nuclear power project became violent in the last two-three days, with the protesters pelting stones and police opening fire.

The body of Tabrez Sayekar, who was killed in the police firing on Monday at Sakhri Nate, was collected by his relatives from the civil hospital here, and taken to his village for burial, hospital sources said.

No violence or breach of peace was registered today in the district, police said.

Yesterday, there was a curfew around the hospital, and prohibitory orders had been clamped elsewhere in the city. Both have been revoked today.
