Appalled by the spate of robberies in the Jain temples, trustees of prominent (derasars) Jain temples held a meeting recently to review security measures.

They discovered that most temples were largely guarded by unarmed security constables.

In the most recent attack (August 22) on a Borivli Jain temple, the attackers had even killed the watchman who tried to catch them.

Jain temples are prone to thefts due to the presence of jewellery, cash, and, above all, the idols of deities, which are carved out of precious stones.

The trustees’ meeting was followed by a meeting with home minister RR Patil and Mangat Prabhat Lodha, a well-known MLA in the community.

“There are many temples in the city, and these are just one-off incidents. However, as a mark of safety, we decided to take up some measures,” said Surendra Savai, trustee of the Godiji Jain temple in Pydhonie, one of the largest Jain temples in the city.

“We have not decided on an estimate for spending. We have increased the number of guards, as of now, and CCTVs may soon be installed,” Savai added.

Shantibhai Shah, trustee of another prominent Jain temple Shwetamber Murtipujak Tapagachha Jain Trust in Malad (East), said, “We have taken measures like putting CCTV cameras and creating an alarm system, complemented with additional guards. But as of now, we can’t get into the details of the entire arrangement.”
