The activists agitating against the proposed Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project (JNPP) have taken up the arms once again. The villagers have decided to undertake a massive jail bharo from December 29 against nuclear plant.

The construction work at the project site, which was halted during the rainy season, has now begun in a full swing, despite opposition from the villagers.

“The road approaching the site is under construction right now, as are some of the laboratories. Almost 60-70 trucks visit the project site every day with soil material. The wall construction is almost complete, and the officials are paying no heed to our agitation,” said Pravin Gavankar of Janhit Sewa Samiti (JSS), a local body representing the villagers.

“This is not going to be the usual jail bharo of one day. We will not come out of the jail until and  unless the work at the project site is stopped,” said Gavankar. He added that the authorities would not find enough jails to accommodate the villagers.
