Two days after seven shooters were arrested in connection with senior journalist J Dey’s murder and after going through his personal emails, the Mumbai crime branch has decided to dig further into Dey’s UK trip.

The guide who had accompanied Dey on the tour has been summoned. He is likely to reach Mumbai in a couple of days.

“We will question him to find out who Dey met during his trip,” said joint commissioner of police Himanshu Roy. After Dey’s murder on June 11, the police had spoken to the tour guide over the phone and he had indicated that Dey had met a few people in the UK. “It is possible that he could have met some friends or acquaintances,” Roy said.

The police plan to show the guide photographs of a few gangsters to check if Dey had met any of them.

The police have also finished going through the 3,000 personal emails in Dey’s inbox and 250 in the drafts folder. “There are 15-20 emails, which are of interest to us and we will scrutinise them further,” Roy said.

In a related development, DK Rao, a close associate of Chhota Rajan, is currently untraceable. Investigations have revealed that Rajan had reportedly ordered Dey’s killing, and Rao’s sudden disappearance has got the police suspicious. “After the arrests, we wanted to question Rao again, but he seems to have gone underground,” said Roy.

A police team will be sent to Nainital to investigate how Rohit Joseph alias Satish Kalya, the sharpshooter allegedly hired by Rajan to kill Dey, had procured the US-made revolver. “There are a few Rajan men in Nainital. We are in touch with the local police there,” Roy said.
