J Dey probe team wins best detection award

Officials of Unit 1 of the property cell and Unit 6 of the Mumbai crime branch were awarded the prestigious Deepak Jog Memorial Award on Wednesday for the best detection of the year 2011 for cracking the sensational murder case of investigative journalist J Dey.

The award has been instituted in memory of late deputy commissioner of police, Deepak Jog, who died of a heart attack in November, 1996, at the age of 36 in his office.

Joint commissioner of police Himanshu Rao, several other officers of the crime branch and senior police inspector Arun Chavan of the property cell were given the award.

The award was given by former director-general of police AV Krishnan to all the officers. The award ceremony was attended by former director general of police Suryakant Jog, father of the late deputy commissioner of police Deepak Jog, D Sivanandhan, SM Shringari, PS Pasricha, RS Sharma, Satish Sahani, OP Bali, and RD Tyagi.

In 2011, a total of 13 cases across Mumbai city were selected as nominations for the award. The crime branch has arrested a total of 11 members of the Chhota Rajan gang for killing J Dey.
