Why did it take investigative journalist Jyotirmoy Dey 75 minutes to reach Powai from his mother’s house in Ghatkopar? Investigators probing the journalist’s murder believe the happenings during these 75 minutes could hold some major clues to the murder.

The police on Tuesday reconstructed the sequence of events on Saturday when Dey was shot dead by four motorcycle-borne assailants in Powai. Police sources said the 3.5-km stretch from Dey’s mother’s residence — Vraj Villa in Ghatkopar’s Amrut Nagar — to the spot where he was shot dead in Powai can be covered in 20 minutes on a two-wheeler. Dey took 55 minutes more.

“He left his mother’s place on a two-wheeler around 1.31pm and reached the spot where he was shot dead around 2.45pm. We are yet to ascertain what happened during these 75 minutes. That might hold the key to his murder and provide us some important leads,” an investigator told DNA. Besides this lead, the police have traced a few more witnesses. “We have got four new witnesses. The details they have provided have made the scope of the investigation wider. New angles are coming up,” a police officer said.

Meanwhile, as part of the investigations, the Crime Branch of the city police is also probing the involvement of a former encounter specialist in the killing. The police said Dey was reportedly collecting some incriminating evidence about the officer’s underworld connection and his involvement in corruption cases. The matter was to be submitted to the Anti-Corruption Bureau for further investigation.

“Investigators are trying to check if the officer who retired a couple of years ago got to know of Dey’s plan to expose him and subsequently used his underworld connection to get rid of the journalist,” a source involved with the probe told DNA.

“The former police officer’s underworld link cropped up earlier this year following the arrest of a gangster.” The officer had denied the allegation at the time.

Police commissioner Arup Patnaik said Dey’s murder seems to be a result of his professional work and not some personal enmity. He vowed to bring Dey’s murderers to justice. Joint commissioner of police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said: “It was not just a killing of a person; it was an assault on democracy.”
