The Mumbai police claim to have cracked the sensational murder of journalist J Dey. But the media briefing of commissioner Arup Patnaik raises more questions than what it answered. The most important question that continues to remain unanswered is what was the motive behind the murder?

Patnaik has alleged that fugitive don Chhota Rajan is behind the murder. The question is why Rajan, who is in hiding at an undisclosed place abroad, wanted Dey to be murdered? Did Rajan merely take “supari” or contract from an influential and wealthy person to gun down Dey? In the past, he had taken “supari” to kill a high-profile target like trade-union leader Dr Datta Samant. Rajan had no personal enmity with Dr Samant, but simply took a contract from a powerful industrialist to kill Dr Samant, who, like Dey, was gunned down at Powai. So the question arises who was the person who gave the contract to Rajan to liquidate Dey?

What did the person who gave the ‘supari’ stand to gain by getting Dey murdered? If it was not a case of contract killing, then why Rajan wanted Dey dead. Dey had no personal enmity with Rajan and Dey is not known to have carried out any media campaign against Rajan or his gang. So why would Rajan want to kill Dey and risk alienating the entire mediaworld? There is speculation that Dey was close to a controversial police officer who was earlier on the payroll of Rajan, but later switched his loyalty to the Dawood Ibrahim gang. But sources say that several other journalists too were close to this officer. In any case, Dey shared a purely professional relationship with this official. So why should he be targeted? In what way was he causing problem to Rajan?

Once again these are questions which Patnaik should answer.
The cops claim to have laid their hands on one of the weapons used in the killing of Dey. Apparently this was the weapon used by the main shooter Satish Kalya. Is there independent forensic confirmation that this indeed was the weapon?  It is true that the underworld works on a need-to-know basis. Hence, the alleged shooters may not know the background of the target or the motive for the “supari”. But certainly the second rung of the Rajan gang, which is very much based in Mumbai, must have known the motive. The police are still not clear as to who called Dey on the fateful day.
