Though the Mumbai police have claimed to have solved the murder mystery of senior journalist J Dey, they are still clueless as to what was the motive behind the killing. The police have arrested seven persons for their alleged involvement in the killing.

According to the police, the assailants identified Dey only through the description given to them and his bike number. “The accused revealed that they were never told about who the target was. Rajan gave Dey’s description and his bike number (MH 03 AD 1869) to Satish Kalya. Kalya was told that the target can be located easily near his office in Parel and at Powai,” said joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy.

He added that, apart from the fact that the target (Dey) is 6.3 feet tall, well built, wears glasses and travels on a motorcycle, nothing else was revealed to the shooters about Dey by Rajan. “During their recce on few occasions, Waghmode and Kalya had identified the target. Only after Dey was shot dead, the assailants came to know through television that the deceased was a senior journalist,” said Roy.

However, there are still few questions that are yet to be unanswered: How is it possible for the shooters to identify a person only on the basis of the description and bike number? Whether all the persons involved in the case are arrested? With Rajan being abroad, how the police will come to know about the motive?

Earlier, the shooters were given photographs of the target so that there is no problem in selecting the target. However, the claim that shooter in Dey case had done the killing only on the basis of description seemed to be an unconventional way to select a target. Another police officer said Rajan probably played a smart game. “Had the accused knew that they had to kill a known journalist, they would have asked for huge money and would have never done the job for such a less amount? We believe that Rajan got the killing done very cheaply,” he said.
