It’s 4.6º Pune’s lowest in 18 years

The sweaters and pullovers are out again as the city experienced the lowest temperature in last 18 years on Thursday morning.

Mercury dipped to 4.6 degrees, which is 8 degrees below normal.
It was in 1994 that minimum temperature had gone down to 4.4 degrees.

“Severe cold wave persists in Maharashtra and the temperature is likely to remain steady for the next 48 hours. The western disturbance has shifted north eastwards leading to severe cold wave in Maharashtra along with Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat,” Indian Meteorological Department director for weather forecast, Sunita Devi, said.

After a temporary rise at the beginning of this week, the temperature in the city started going down from Wednesday. It reached 4.6 degrees on Thursday morning which is also the lowest of the season. The maximum temperature on Thursday was 29.3 degrees.

Last year, the lowest temperature was 5.3 degrees on January 7. The lowest ever that the city has experienced was 1.7 degrees on January 17, 1935. In the month of February, the lowest temperature in the city till now was 3.9 degrees on February 1, 1934.

Even in other parts of Maharashtra, minimum temperature dipped below normal almost in all the major cities on Thursday and cold wave conditions would prevail for the next 48 hours. Even the maximum temperatures were below normal at some places.
The lowest minimum in the state on Thursday was in Nashik which shivered with 2.7 degrees, 8 degrees below normal.
