Jyotindra Ajinkya, 72, has been running the half marathon (21.97km) for the last eight years.

“Advancing age should never be used as an excuse to not do the things one wants to do,” says Ajinkya, who believes everything is possible with discipline and hard work.

The Mahim resident, who is a retired bank employee and fitness consultant, trains throughout the year.   “I begin by running 4km in the first four months. Then I cover 10km in the next four months and finally 15km in the last four months leading up to the half marathon.”

Ajinkya is quick to point out that his regime should not be a deterrent to beginners at the Stayfree DNA I Can Half Marathon. “The idea is to set smaller goals and steadily raise the bar. If I can do it, so can anyone,” he says.

For first-timers, Ajinkya suggests: “Begin slowly and enjoy the training. Taking the first step is essential. The rest can be achieved over a period of time with determination and time management.”

Ajinkya points out that running it is a great way to boost fitness levels and achieve personal milestones.

“Participation and completing the half marathon is important for me, not just winning it,” he says.

Emphasising that it is never too late to start running or training for the marathon, he points out that weight management is the key to a healthier life. “Women should eat in moderation and take up any physical activity... even a 30-minute brisk walk daily can keep you fit.”
