An alleged rift between noted actor and director and chairperson of the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI), Nandita Das, and an IPS officer of rank of inspector general of police (IGP) has reached the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), as well as the Bombay high court.

Sushovan Banerjee, CEO of CFSI, a 1989-batch IPS officer from Madhya Pradesh (MP), had moved the CAT challenging his sudden repatriation order.

Banerjee, who was sent on a three-year deputation to CFSI, Mumbai, in December 2008, was repatriated back to MP by the ministry of information and broadcasting on April 26.

Banerjee had joined CFSI as IG in February 2009 and was supposed to hold the post till February next year.

The alleged rift between Das and Banerjee surfaced after the Centre filed a detailed affidavit in CAT.

The reply said that Banerjee was repatriated after
verbal complaints were received against him. The affidavit stated that Banerjee was not working in harmony with Das.

Banerjee denied the averments made in the affidavit, and stated: “In the reply, it is not clear who made such ‘verbal’ complaints, and who heard them. Therefore, it can be safely said the defence taken by the respondents (government) is an afterthought.”

Banerjee’s lawyer Sandeep Marne said repatriation cannot be ordered on grounds such as ‘verbal complaints’. The CAT in May had granted an ad-interim relief to Banerjee and had stayed the repatriation order.

The order was challenged by the Centre in the high court. But the court pulled up the Centre on Tuesday for moving the high court while the case is still pending in the CAT.
