On Borivli metropolitan magistrate’s orders, the Malwani police have registered a case of extortion, wrongful confinement, and conspiracy against special inspector general of police Jawahar Singh and five others.

Singh is currently posted as the chief vigilance officer in Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada). The court passed the order on February 23, and the case was registered on February 28.

The complainant, Firoz Khan, 37, who runs a construction business, has alleged that there was an attempt on his life two years ago at the instance of his business rival, Ismail Sayyed.

“I was being targeted because I had filed an RTI plea in Mhada in 2007 through which I found that my business rivals have been making illegal deals with certain Mhada officers,” Khan said. Khan then filed a case against Sayyed and some others.

“They then pressurised me to take back the case. But when I refused, I was implicated in some false cases,” Khan said.

He also alleged that he was arrested by the Santa Cruz, Malwani and Kandivli police following notices which had been sent by Singh. Khan then approached the Borivli court, which directed the police to lodge an FIR against the Mhada officer.

Singh, however, alleged that he had received four complaints against Khan. “This is a conspiracy against me because I have received complaints against Khan for malpractices and illegal dealings in the World Bank project related to Mhada,” Singh said.
