Against the backdrop of Supreme Court's remarks against Geetha Johri in the Sohrabuddin encounter case, senior IPS officer and convenor of the apex court-appointed Special investigation team (SIT) probing the 2002 post-Godhra riots cases Johri has
offered to quit the team.

"I have written letters to amicus curiae (friend of the court) Harish Salve and SIT head R K Raghavan offering to quit the team with the Supreme Court's approval," Johri said.

"I can answer questions raised about the investigation in Sohrabuddin case and other cases but I am just disgusted with personal allegations that have been thrown at me," she said.

Johri is Rajkot Commissioner of Police and had investigated the case of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, an alleged gangster who was killed in a "fake encounter" by the police.

His wife Kausar Bi had also disappeared and was alleged to
have been bumped off by the police to destroy evidence.

Over 10 police personnel including three IPS officers of Gujarat and Rajasthan are behind the bars in the case. The Supreme Court had on January 13 handed over the case to CBI expressing displeasure over the way it was beinginvestigated by Gujarat police.

Solicitor General of India Gopal Subramanium had during Tuesday's hearing in the SC on SIT sought its reconstitution following the apex court's remarks against Johri. The Supreme Court has accepted Subramanium's submission and posted the matter for further hearing on February 9.

While ordering a CBI probe into the Sohrabuddin case, the Supreme Court bench of justices Tarun Chaterjee and Aftam
Alam remarked that the Gujarat police did not properly
investigate it.

"Investigating Officer V L Solanki was proceeding in the right direction, but Johri had not been carrying out the investigation in the right manner," the bench had observed.

The apex court had said it was of the view that Johri's mentioning the criminal background of Sohrabuddin was meant to "obfuscate the inquiry".

The bench also said there was an attempt by the Gujarat government to mislead the court on the whereabouts of Sohrabuddin's wife Kauser Bi and family friend Tulsiram Prajapati, who too were alleged to have been killed by the police to destroy evidence.

During the hearing, Subramanium had alleged that the Gujarat government had given a plot of land to Johri in Gandhinagar after she was given the charge of investigation of the Sohrabuddin encounter case.
