Eighty-year-old George Mathai is a disturbed man at his age. The reason? The inflated gas bill has depleted his bank balance to the tune of over Rs50,000. Mathai, a Deonar resident, now wants the overcharged money back.

Mathai had taken a gas connection from Mahanagar Gas Limited in 1997. For ten years the bi-montly bills sent to him were not more than Rs250.

"All of a sudden one day they deducted around Rs19,000 from my bank account for the supply made in the month of December. Considering that they are a government body, I trusted them to not send me inflated bills and hence I had arranged for the payment through the ECS system," said Mathai.

Mathai then contacted his supplier only to find that the Bill meter number was different. “Since 1997 to June 2007, my meter number has been 80410815. From June 2007 they started sending me bills for meter number 60806672. For few years the bill amount was similar but in December 2010, it was shocking Rs 19,204. How can a husband-wife consume so much gas when even our food mostly comes from outside?" questioned Mathai.

The problem of the inflated bill was not only of that month. The figure of Rs50,000 is the result of three consecutive bills. “They did not change the meter until October 2011. The consecutive bills (February, April and June, 2011) were over Rs17,000, Rs16,000 and Rs 18,000. After much persuasion I managed to change the meter number.

The bill amount came in the range of Rs500 but now again they have sent me a bill of over Rs4,000. I want them to review all the readings since 2007 as the amount billed was for a meter that
did not belong to me. They should return the excess money,” he said.

When contacted, Rishi Kumar, an executive of the Mahanagar Gas Limited, said, “The person has come to us and we had rectified his billing problem.”
