Geeta Ramchandra Godbole, India's first woman pilot, passed away on Wednesday afternoon due to old age. She was 91.

She breathed her last at her daughter Rekha Krishan's home in Kalyaninagar.

Born on December 23, 1920, in a family of freedom fighters, Geeta was an amateur pilot and known to be a dynamic and courageous personality. When girls in the pre-Independence India normally concentrated on domestic chores, her interests were horse riding and rifle shooting.

Geeta flew her first solo flight, a Tiger Moth (bi-plane), on February 14, 1940. She was married to a Tata Airlines pilot, but her husband died when she was just 21 years old.

Geeta remarried the late Colonel Ramchandra Godbole at the age of 28, when remarriage was still considered taboo in society. She is survived by two daughters, Jai Pagnis and Rekha Krishan, two sons-in-law, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The last rites would be performed at the Vaikunth crematorium in Navi Peth on Thursday at 10 am.
