India Against Corruption (IAC) activists launched their campaign against errant autorickshaw drivers on Thursday. The campaign seeks to provide a simple SMS-based grievance redressal mechanism for commuters who have complaints against autorickshaw drivers arbitrarily refusing fares and behaving rudely.

The complaints are being registered by the IAC under five heads: No Meter, Zyaada Bhaada, Badtameezi, Mana Kiya and Meter Kharaab. Unsurprisingly, on the first day of the campaign, the maximum number of complaints registered, 21, were for refusing fares. Next on the list of complaints, 13, was faulty meter. The third spot, 10 complaints, was for excess fare.

Mayank Gandhi, from the Mumbai Chapter of the IAC said: “Poor policing by traffic department has forced us to use technology to reduce corruption by collecting these complaints which will be forwarded to the transport department every week. We will monitor the action being taken on behalf of the public. The transport department is reluctant to act on commuters’ complaints. If it continues with this attitude, we will mount an agitation to force the department to take action.”

Presently, the transport department has an Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS)-based toll free helpline for recording commuters’ complaints. However, more than a year after it has been launched, not many commuters seem keen to use it.
Over 2,000 complaints have been registered by RTOs across the city and a number of them have been disposed of.
