BJP deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde today demanded that other backward classes (OBC) count be included during the ongoing census exercise.

"OBC count should be included in the census. It was not being done because some people fear OBCs will come together once they know their true strength," Munde said at a gathering of state OBC leaders here.

"This will be the first time that OBCs count won't take place in census which includes count of cattle and domestic animals," he said.

The former Maharashtra deputy chief minister said he was willing to work for a national movement of OBCs, under the leadership of deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who also spoke at the function.

Munde said his personal opinion was that there should be reservation for OBCs in the women reservation in assemblies and Lok Sabha. "I will persevere to have my party take this view," Munde said.

Bhujbal said the budgetary allocation for OBCs was not being utilised fully. Even the allocation for SC/STs remains unutilised to a great extent, he added. There should be 27% reservation for OBCs in Lok Sabha, he added.
