A six-month-old died and five were injured when a major fire broke out in a chawl at Kurar village, Malad (East), on Thursday. A cylinder exploded at a gas agency in Sai Nath Niwas chawl and gutted the structure.

Ayush Chaubey, Pankaj Kashyap, 25 and Sonu Yadav, 22 were rushed to Bhagwati hospital. Brahma Devi, 72, Nandlal Chaubey, 32 and Panchlal Chaubey, 29 were admitted to Sanjeevni hospital.
Ayush suffered 100% burns and succumbed, while Yadav is critical with 95% burns. “Ayush died at midnight. Yadav’s condition is serious,” said Dr Vijaya Bhatt, deputy superintendent of Bhagwati hospital.
The fire broke out at 9.40pm. Prima facie evidences prove that it started due to gas leakage and led to two cylinder blasts, said a senior fire official. The victims have been found guilty of the mishap. Ayush’s father Nandlal and uncle Panchlal used to run the shop illegally in the locality. Kashyap and Yadav worked at the shop. Brahma Devi is Ayush’s grandmother.
The police found 11 empty cylinders and 16 filled ones at the spot. “We have registered a case of negligence against the shop owners. Once the accused recuperate, we will proceed with the investigation,” said Mohan Shankhe, senior inspector, Kurar police station.
“The duo used to transfer LPG into empty cylinders and sell them. We had warned them that their business was risky, but they never listened,” said a neighbour. “We have lost our only son. I wish we had not started this business,” said Sushila Mahesh, Ayush’s aunt. The family members also regret taking Ayush to the shop. “His grandmother had taken him for a walk and reached the shop,” added the neighbour.
