Most would be aware of the word “thalassemia” but very few know the cause, effect and what it takes to prevent the disorder. And to spread the message and create awareness of thalassemia, students of IIT-Bombay have taken upon them to do the needful through their popular annual cultural festival; Mood Indigo.

The students of IIT-Bombay this year are planning to launch a social cause, titled - ‘Thalassemia-it’s bloody serious’.

A bill has been drafted by the students, which suggests making thalassemia testing compulsory before marriage, to prevent the child from having thalassemia minor. The bill will travel across the nation through different institutes garnering support. The campaign will kick start on 27th September with the signature campaign and will continue till Mood Indigo.

Thalassemia is a terminal disorder, which requires a patient to undergo a blood transfusion every month. Mood Indigo has vowed to increase awareness about the disease through free thalassemia testing in various colleges across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

“A thalassemia minor patient is relatively safe (even Amitabh Bachchan suffers from it). However, the child of two thalassemia minor parents has a 25% chance of being a thalassemia major. Hence, there has to be enough awareness about it so that the coming generation is not affected by the disorder,” said Palash Kulkarni, media manager, IIT-B Mood Indigo.

A three-page bill on thalassemia is prepared by the students. The bill will travel across Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Pune and Delhi to garner as much support as possible. “We aim to get as many signatures as possible from the citizens of the country in support of the bill. The signed bill will then be presented to a member of Parliament, who will help us to get it passed. Honestly, but the fire begins with a spark. And we are only the spark providers,” says Prakkhar Gupta, who is a part of the campaign.
