As many as four MTech students have decided to pursue PhD after IIT Bombay introduced MTech-PhD dual degree for engineering programmes in 2009. This is a part of the comprehensive review of the PhD programme initiated by IIT Bombay.
“We are known for our undergraduate education but we also want to be known as an excellent research institute,” said RK Shevgaonkar, deputy director, IIT Bombay.
VM Gadre, associate dean (academic programmes) said that the MTech-PhD dual degree programme enables masters students to shift while they are in the first stage of their dissertation.
Shevgaonkar said the aim is that every PhD student gets to attend one international conference in their tenure.
Another possibility being discussed is whether one can financially reward students who do better research.
Gadre said the institute is looking at ways to make the training
stronger and systematic so that the thesis is stronger. “We also feel that we need to have a systematic employment of our PhD students. The idea is to make the transition more attractive for students,” said Gadre. The committee is expected to come up with regular suggestions over the next two years.
