The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) will now house a 10x5 feet vermiculture plant on its campus. In fact, the plant has already been constructed and will be operational sometime soon.

A biogas plant is also in the pipeline.

These and other recommendations have been given in the report submitted by the Green Campus Initiative Committee (GCIC) which was set up in February, in a move to conserve the campus’s rich biodiversity and make it a more green campus.

According to MB Patil, professor, electrical engineering department, and also convenor of the GCIC, the institute has decided to take serious measures to make it greener.

He said, “Wet garbage can be disposed of in two ways. A vermiculture pit with short walls is already completed for one of the residential buildings that has 24 flats and will be operational soon. The committee has also proposed a biogas plant, the byproduct of which will be used as fertiliser for the campus gardens.” Use of solar energy is also suggested.

Grey water (water from kitchens and bathrooms) will be recycled in the campus residential buildings and hostels to supply toilet flush tanks, gardens, etc.

The committee also suggested the use of reflecting paint on rooftops to keep the top-floor flats cool and thus save electricity. Rainwater harvesting inside the campus to reduce water consumption is also being considered.
