Contrary to the popular perception that IITians do not give enough back to society, students at IIT Bombay have come up with their own unique way of spreading environmental awareness.

With the backing of an institute that boasts of momentous research in the development of eco-friendly technology, these students are willing to step beyond mere academic pursuits. The IIT Bombay Green Campus Initiative was launched a year ago with the objective of transforming the institution of world-class repute into a futuristic model of ecological sustainability and energy efficiency.

With the purpose of taking this initiative beyond the campus, Aakaar - the annual technical festival of the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay - has chosen Go Green as its theme for their forthcoming edition which will be held on the 3rd of March at the campus.

The prime crowd-puller of this festival is a National Students' Symposium which will be conducted on the lines of a student conference.

This event will see the participation of students from over 140 colleges across India presenting their research work.

"The symposium has been instituted with the aim of providing budding civil engineers a modest pedestal to put forth their ideas, be heard on a grand platform and get assessed by popular industry professionals and adept professors. It is very heart-warming to know that a large proportion of the entries are pertaining to the field of sustainable technology development in civil engineering and otherwise." said  Rohin Bakshi, the Overall Coordinator of Aakaar 2012.

Besides the symposium, these students have planned to create an online deliberation forum to propagate their undertaking and provide a social dimension to this technical festival.

"This forum will feature discussions and debates on diverse socio-environmental issues close to the people's hearts. We believe that this is an effective way of sharing thoughts and presenting opinions on sensitive issues so that both sides of an argument get a fair say." said Ashlesh Sonje, the Manager of Events at Aakaar.

Another aspect of this festival is a civil engineering and environmental awareness-based quiz 'CivIQ'.

As Aakaar aspires to spread beyond just the IIT Bombay campus, four legs for this quiz were held, one each in popular engineering colleges of Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur and Nashik.

The grand finale for this quiz would be held at the IIT Bombay campus on the occasion of the festival.

To add to this monsterous undertaking, a multitude of competitions, technical workshops and guest lectures by veterans in the field of civil and environmental engineering would also be organized during the festival.
