Hoping to encourage small donations while offering complete transparency in how the donated money is spent, the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay (IIT-B) Alumni Association plans to design an electronic donation system. With this ambitious system, an alumni member will be able to donate even a small amount, following which the donor will also be able to track how the money is being spent.

The system which will be designed by Findability India, the Indian chapter of a US-based fund facilitator company, will not only ensure a convenient donation process but also promise anonymity for those who choose not to disclose their names.

According to Shirish Potnis, CEO, IIT-B Alumni Association, while there are some important figures in the IIT-B alumni who donate large sums to the institute, there are others who might feel uncomfortable donating smaller amounts. However, the alumni association wants to send the message that even a small share can help make a difference. The objective behind the system is to reach out to all possible donors.

“After one donation, the user will be referred to as a donor in all subsequent visits to the portal. The donor will be given timely reports on how the donated amount is being used. We hope to generate large amounts of funds with this process which will be used to develop IIT-B,” explained Potnis.

Following the interest expressed by the IIT-B Alumni Association, Findability India is expecting a very successful result. Praveen Babu, head of department, sales, said, “The portal will give the user an option to not be listed as donor. However, every donor will be given complete information on the whereabouts of his/her donated amount.”

Interestingly, the portal will automatically register all alumni members who have already made contributions in the past or shown interest in doing so. “This system  will help the alumni association analyse strategies to encourage more donations,” said Babu.

Sources say, the IIT-B Alumni Association will soon start a campaign encouraging alumni members to donate one percent of their annual income to their alma mater.
