This is not a proud moment for me, having nabbed the killer driver, Santosh Mane as I could not save more lives,” said Shareef Ibrahim Kutty (21).

Shareef, a resident of Vishrantwadi, was to attend his class in Poona College on Wednesday, but Mane’s mowing down whoever came in his way led Shareef risk his life to catch the culprit.

Shareef, a third-year student of bachelor of computer science, along with other people and the police, nabbed Mane near Neelayam Talkies.

Shareef said, “When I saw the bus mowing down everyone deliberately, I could not stand the scene and started chasing the bus to save the lives of other people. I started chasing him from Pulgate, honking continuously and shouting at people to move out of the way. The culprit was driving the bus at full speed and while I was chasing him, my bike’s speed was at least 70 km per hour.”

He added, “I saw him mowing down a mother-daughter duo near Pulgate. The bus dragged the vehicle for 25 metres. The bus hit barricades put up by the Cantonment police and injured a constable.”

Shareef said Mane was driving the bus from Try Luck Chowk towards Ramoshi Gate on the narrow street.

“When he reached Ramoshi Gate, the bus went berserk towards Hotel Seven Loves Chowk. At Volga Chowk, the bus hit a two-wheeler rider who was thrown, but the vehicle was dragged till Mitramandal Chowk,” Shareef said, adding, “Again near Sawarkar statue on Sinhagad Road, the bus hit another two-wheeler rider and went onto the divider, but after turning right towards Neelayam theatre, he lost control. I overpowered him along with other people who were chasing him and some residents of the area.”

The police vehicle, that was chasing the bus, was stuck at the traffic signal at Sawarkar statue and reached the spot some minutes later. The police took Mane away.

When asked what his family members’ reaction was, Shareef said, “My father, who is engaged as a fishmonger and mother, a fashion designer, asked me why I put my life in danger. I told them that I could not bear to see what was going on in front of my eyes and I could not see innocent people losing their lives for no reason.”
