It is a story of a daughter’s constant anxiousness about the well-being of her mother, who is thousands of kilometres away and fighting tireless to see a corruption-free India.

Saina Bharucha, the only daughter of Kiran Bedi, the country’s first woman IPS officer and an integral part of Team Anna, has always prayers on her lips for
her mother.

Bedi, known for her integrity and honesty as a police officer, took voluntary retirement in 2007. Saina, married to writer Ruzbeh, stays in Pune. The couple has a daughter.

Interacting with DNA, Saina said she is with her mother through her prayers since day 1 of her fight to strengthen the anti-corruption laws in the country. But, Saina admitted, anxiety for her mother is nothing new.

“I have grown up seeing my mother going out on night patrols. There were times when she had to go out at odd hours to tackle violent agitations, and strikes. As a young girl, I used to often wonder why my mother had to always
take the lead,’’ Saina said.

However, the realisation that her mother was the proverbial ‘destiny’s child’ had made Saina rally behind her mother wholeheartedly. “Yes, there were times I just broke down in front of her. But then my mother told me that she has a calling and she had to go,’’ she confided.

It was this calling that made Saina realise that her mother is not meant for the mundane.

“It is only after great introspection that my mother takes up a cause. She makes statements after astute reasoning. I know my mother will not take any rash or ill conceived step, ever,’’ she explained.

Asked about Kiran Bedi’s equations with Anna Hazare, Saina said she (Kiran Bedi) has highest regard for Hazare.

“In the last few months, she worked very closely with Anna on the Jan Lokpal Bill issue. I have heard words of admiration and respect from her about Anna,’’ Saina said.

Saina has been in regular touch with her mother in recent days. “She makes it a point to call us twice a day to let us know of her well-being,’’ Saina confided.

Both Saina and Ruzbeh are involved in community services in Pune. The duo is also undertakes production of short films and documentaries.

Like all grandmothers, Kiran Bedi is extremely attached to Saina’s new born daughter.

“My mother once told me to tell my daughter that she (Kiran Bedi) had fought for the nation so that my daughter could live and breathe in a corruption-free country. This I think was the best gift from a woman to her granddaughter,’’ she said.
