The Mankhurd police have arrested a 32-year-old man on charges of killing his wife. The accused, identified as Milton Noor Qazi, a native of West Bengal, was caught when he was trying to flee after allegedly committing the crime on Thursday night.
According to the police, Qazi killed his wife Priya alias Zarinba Qazi, 25, at her residence in Ekta Nagar in the Mandala locality of Mankhurd.
A farmer by profession, Qazi told the police that his wife had left him and their daughter and came to Mumbai with their three-year-old son two months back.
Qazi claimed that he came to Mumbai to take her back home. He kept searching for her for nearly a week as she had not told him about her Mankhurd address. He came to know that she worked as a waitress in a bar and then found her residence.
A senior police officer from Mankhurd police station said, “When Qazi came to know that Priya shared her residence with another waiter of the bar and she had an illicit relationship with him, he started questioning her. Qazi told her to quit her bar job and return to West Bengal with him. A few neighbours heard them quarrelling and then saw Qazi running away with their son. Suspecting foul play, they informed the police.”
The police found Priya’s body on the floor of her residence. Qazi had allegedly strangulated her using a dupatta.
Police nabbed Qazi in the Mandala locality while trying to flee in an autorickshaw. “Qazi was caught around 11:30pm when he was trying to flee in an autorickshaw. Beat marshals who were patrolling the area nabbed him.”
Qazi has been booked for murder and remanded in police custody.
