In a major breakthrough on Tuesday, the officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) managed to convince 64 residents of Netaji Nagar in Kurla to vacate their tenements for the construction of much awaited Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR).

Now with the residents agreeing to vacate their flats, the two buildings in the path of the road are likely to be razed before monsoon this year.

Newly appointed metropolitan commissioner Rahul Asthana was happy that the residents have finally agreed to vacate. “Their tenements were constructed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) and they were much smaller than what the MMRDA has offered them. As per our proposal, they are to be given a 470 sq ft tenement in the heart of Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on a new plot. While the construction of this new building is on, they will be given a rent of Rs3.96 lakh for a period of three years,” said Asthana.

According to PH Warwadekar, the official who has been pursuing this issue for a while, the residents were asking for a bank guarantee of Rs1.25 crore from the authority.

“We had conveyed to them MMRDA’s inability to give such a massive amount as bank guarantee. The plot on which they are to be relocated has some slums at present. They were in doubt about being shifted to a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) type of a project,” said Warwadekar.

The issue between these residents and MMRDA was likely to become dirty since the authority had to force an acquisition notice on to the residents.

However, it was resolved peacefully after negotiations. This will now clear the hurdle in the construction of SCLR, which is one of the most delayed road components under the World Bank sponsored Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP).
