Parents of a 4-month-old infant admitted to the Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital (ABMH) have approached the charity commissioner alleging that they have been denied custody of their child by the hospital despite repeated requests.

The charity commissioner has issued a show-cause notice to ABMH, run by the Aditya Birla Foundation, to appear before the commissioner on Friday.

Denying the parents' allegations, the hospital management said that it has not received any legal notice till 5 pm on Thursday.

A baby boy was born to Kailas and Rekha Kamble of Dhankavdi on March 23 at Tanna Hospital in Yamunanagar, Nigdi.

The infant developed respiratory problems and the parents shifted him to Unique Hospital in Chinchwad, and later to ABMH the same day.

However, the parents could not afford the bill charged by the hospital and requested the authority to discharge the baby.

For the period between March 23 and July 21, the hospital charged Rs9,93,146. The family managed to pay Rs7,08,500 by borrowing from relatives, friends and on interest from private moneylenders.

The parents claim they have been denied custody of the child even after repeated pleas and written applications.

On July 27, Kailas moved the charity commissioner and lodged a complaint as the hospital is run by a charity organisation.

The aggrieved parents of the infant submitted documents showing they belong to weaker section of society and want to shift the baby to a government hospital as they cannot afford the expenses.

They alleged that the hospital authorities have told them that unless they pay the amount, the infant will not be discharged from hospital.
