A team of 20 academicians from at least five city colleges are visiting Israel to learn about the Holocaust, which could be introduced as an extensive study subject than being presently taught.

The Holocaust refers to mass murder of 9million Jews during World War II.
The principals, heads of department and professor teaching humanities are attending a two-week programme organised by the International School of Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum. Yad Vashem is Israel’s memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

Currently, the Holocaust included in school curriculum as part of a chapter on the Second World War. ‘The Israeli embassy has been lobbying for Holocaust to be included in academics for students in India, one of the few countries which has never discriminated against Jews.

A spokesperson of the Israeli Embassy  said that not much was being taught in Indian schools about atrocities committed on Jews. “Of 9million Jews who lived in Europe, 6million were brutally murdered in Germany during the Second World War by the Nazi regime. India is one of the few countries in the world where Jews have always lived in peace and harmony,” said the spokesperson. During the programme, participants will study about the horrors of the Holocaust. Besides classroom studies, the programme also include interaction with the Holocaust survivors, study tours and interaction with the Jewish community of Indian origin in Israel.
