Holi revelry claims seven lives in Mumbai

Twenty-year-old Rajesh Yadav died and his friend of the same age, Rupesh Yadav, is critical, after the two ventured too far into the sea at Aksa in Malad on Monday morning. Both residents of Shivaji Nagar in Borivli had gone to Aksa beach with a few friends to celebrate Holi.

Senior police inspector V R Andhale of Malwani police station said, “Rajesh, Rupesh and their friends played Holi on the beach and then entered the sea for a swim. While their friends came out of the water, Rajesh and Rupesh wandered deep and got stuck”.

He added, “Their friends alerted a few locals who brought the two out of the water. Both were rushed to the hospital where Rajesh was declared dead before admission, while Rupesh is critical.”

Meanwhile, at Arnala in Virar, three youngsters drowned in the sea on Monday evening. Police and fishermen fished out their bodies and sent them for post mortem. The deceased have been identified as Lawrence Balan, 24, Harisingh Chavan, 22, and Madansingh Pawar, 23. After playing Holi on the shore, they ventured into the sea to wash off the colour.

In another incident, tragedy struck a family at Virar while they were preparing to light a Holi bonfire on Sunday. According to police, the Dangda family in Mandvi Village had selected a place right under a high-tension wire. Around 10 pm, some people tried to straighten a 35-foot coconut tree at the spot. When the tree touched the high-tension wire, Lilu Dangda, 50, Hitesh Kumble, 14, and Lakhu Dangda, 35, were electrocuted on the spot. The injured were rushed to Golden Park Hospital.

Drunk dies in well:  A 26-year-old man who was drunk, died after falling into a well on Monday afternoon in Vile Parle (East). According to police, Sandeep Dattaram Mandavkar, resident of Ambedkar Nagar, had consumed alcohol to celebrate Holi and fell asleep on the boundary wall of the well around 3.20pm. He soon fell in. People around brought him out and rushed him to hospital where he was declared dead before admission. “We have registered a case of accidental death,” said a police officer.
