While the degree colleges in the city declared their first merit list for admissions to degree courses on Monday, many were left disappointed as cut-offs to professional courses soared by as much as 3% compared to last year, with many colleges having cut-offs above 90%.

For instance, the cut-off for BMS touched the skies at HR College of Commerce in Churchgate with 92.3% (for science students). At Vile Parle’s NM college it was 91.60%. Last year, the cut-off at these colleges was around 88%.

Principal of DG Ruparel college Dr Tushar Joshi said, “Though the pass percentage of students was only 69.72% this year at the HSC, number of students scoring in the 90s and 80s has increased. This is one of the reasons behind the soaring cut-offs. Also, most students apply only to top colleges for job-oriented or professional courses, so cut-offs will be above 90.”

At DG Ruparel in Matunga, cut-offs were up by a shocking 8% for BMM.

Other popular self-financing courses such as BCom in banking and insurance, BCom in accounts and finance, BCom in financial markets, BSc in computer science or information technology also saw cut-offs ranging between 83% and 93% across colleges.

Some top colleges, such as St Xavier’s, Ruparel, Ruia, HR, Jai Hind or KC, observed only a marginal increase from 2010. For instance, while the BMM cut-offs at Ruia college increased by 0.34% to 2.84%, BSc bio technology saw a 2% rise, computer science went up by 1.67%. BSc IT (Maths) too saw a 3% rise, and in Bhavan’s college BSc computer science rose by 6% as compared to last year.

“The first list cut-offs are high as most students apply to multiple colleges. We’ll get a correct picture by the second list. Even then, cut-offs will dip by maximum 2% for professional courses, as seats are limited,” said TA Shiware, principal, Hinduja college. The second list will be out on June 22-23.
