Sir JJ Hospital has received a final nod from the state government to build a 19-storey building for a super speciality department in the heritage precinct. It will be the first high-rise building in the
JJ campus.

State chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad approved the proposed high-rise building in JJ hospital on Monday. Gaikwad had called for a meeting to discuss the upcoming building issue in the presence of secretaries for medical education, planning, finance and the public works department (PWD).

Dr TP Lahane, dean of JJ hospital, also attended the meeting held at the Mantralaya. PWD chief architect Bipin Sankhe has prepared the plan for the new building.

The state government has earmarked Rs375 crore for the construction of this 19-storey tower. However, in the first phase, only Rs125 crore will be released.

Sir JJ Hospital is one of the oldest and largest hospitals in Southeast Asia. This 1,352-bed hospital was established by Sir Jameshdji Jeejeebhoy around 150 years ago.

With 16 operation theatres and 38 departments, 2,500 OPD patients are attended to daily. The hospital also sees 1,100 admissions and 200 surgeries a day.

Over the past few years, the hospital has been facing an acute shortage of space. To battle this problem, the hospital administration recently asked the government for permission to use its old prisoner ward.

The hospital administration plans to shift nine departments into this building, each of which will be dedicated to supra-major treatments like neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, urology and plastic surgery.

“We have finally got the green signal from the state government to construct one of the tallest buildings in our campus. We need more space for the better running of the hospital's super speciality departments. This work is expected to be completed within four years. Once the building is finished, we will be able to admit more patients. Currently, the hospital is running at full capacity,” said Dr Lahane.
