He’s the man with a new ‘vision’. US-based eye surgeon Dr Arun Gulani, who has been selected by Goldline Research as one of the leading laser eye surgeons in the US for 2009, is a Gen Next doctor using innovation techniques to cure his patients. Gulani uses state-of-the-art laser technology with micron-precision incisions and diamond surgical instruments to give his patients a ‘super vision’, a termed coined by him.
An alumnus of Mumbai’s Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Gulani feels that there is a vision correction alternative for every single individual.
“I come across people who are pronounced unsuitable for Lasik because they have large pupils, thin cornea, suffer from astigmatism or because they are too old. However, what eye surgeons don’t tell these patients is that, Lasik is not the only vision corrective surgery. There are close to 40 other such procedures,” Gulani said. “You can choose the one that is most suitable for your eyes.”
For instance, someone with a thin cornea can get a permanent contact lens put in the eye; a person with cataract can undergo surgery and then go for Lasik. This would eliminate the need of wearing glasses. “Select the right procedure. Why should you be sentenced to wearing glasses for life?” Gulani said.
In 2005, Gulani successfully performed a pathbreaking artificial corneal transplant surgery on an 85-year-old visually impaired woman. “Artificial corneal transplant (the cornea is made of a polymer) is the first step towards a bionic eye. It is the future of eye surgery as there is a huge shortage of human cornea,” Gulani said.
But aren’t such surgeries advanced for India. Gulani, who is the founder director of Gulani Vision in Florida, said: “The future is here. Indian patients are far too tolerant, less litigative and less demanding of their doctors. Just ask your doctor the right questions.”
