A day after the bizarre incident where a ninth standard girl was gunned down by a retired customs officer, who was also gunned down by the police, neighbours said that the girl Hemini Mehta was screaming for help after she was locked inside the flat by the assailant.
The 16-year-old girl was also an adopted child of Mehta family, they said adding that she was calm girl and good at studies.
"We are yet to recover from yesterday's tragedy. My ears are still hearing her (girl's) screams for help. We never thought that something like this would ever happen in our society," said a neighbour, who did not reveal his name.
The girl was adopted when she was eight-months old byMehta's family, she added.
Assistant police commissioner Dilip Suryavanshi said, "Initially we could hear the girl's cry. But there was no word of the girl when we tried to break open the house."
Seemingly irked by renovation work going on in his neighbour's house, a former customs officer Harish Maroliya (60) yesterday allegedly shot dead Hemini Mehta after locking her inside his third floor house in Sourang Society in suburban Andheri.
Police broke open the door to rescue the girl when Maroliya fired at them, forcing them to fire back in which was injured and later died.
Meanwhile, doctors have conducted post-mortem on the two bodies in J J hospital and bullets recovered from their bodies have been sent for forensic tests.
"One bullet each was found in Harish and Himani's bodies. In Himani's body, a bullet was found in the lower part of the back on right side. In Harish's body, a bullet was recovered from his right shoulder," said doctor Sudhir Nanandkar.
The bullets and the skin pieces of the injury parts have been sent for forensic tests, Nanandkar said.
