The mystery of the missing bulletproof jacket worn by slain anti-terrorism squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare on 26/11 has left the state government grappling for convincing answers.
A senior official in the home ministry said the matter could not be discussed as chief minister Ashok Chavan and home minister RR Patil were busy with the winter session . “However, a three-member core committee of the home department is already probing the matter,” he said.
A former home minister on condition of anonymity said, “If someone has thrown the jacket in the dumping ground, then it calls for further investigation.” He also said that the government cannot ignore the senior police officers who have rubbished the conspiracy theory.
The opposition has, however, taken this as an opportunity to slam the government. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Vinod Tawde said, “If the chief minister or home minister had accepted the truth that Karkare’s jacket went missing and that there was a lapse on their part, we would have understood. But to hide one lie they have been giving hundred more lies every day.”
