Hundreds of motorists suffered during the inauguration programme of the flyovers at Lalbaug and Kings Circle (Tulpule Chowk). Despite the media coming down heavily on the authorities, neither Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) nor the state government seem to have learnt a lesson.

Now, motorists plying on the Swami Vivekanand (SV) road in the western suburbs are likely to suffer the same ordeal as the government plans to inaugurate the Barfiwala flyover soon.
Metropolitan commissioner Rahul Asthana visited the site of this 190-metre flyover which is likely to be opened very soon, according to a written statement issued by MMRDA.

A similar programme to inaugurate the flyover is in the offing. The authority has already sent a request letter to the office of the chief minister.

“Although we are yet to get a response from the CM, it is likely that the he will inaugurate this flyover,” said a source in the authority.

Clear indications have also come from various officials of the authority who have said that the chief minister is likely to be invited.

MMRDA member and BJP corporator Ashish Shelar lambasted the government as well as the authority over the issue.

“The existing flyovers have already seen some damage as there are potholes on them within a week of their inauguration. The chief minister is just opening one flyover after the other. This is clearly an election gimmick of the Congress-NCP ruled government. They are not bothered about the common man who suffers a during such inaugurations,” said Shelar.

The two-lane southern arm of the flyover is likely to be opened soon. “It will help vehicle owners avoid the crowded SV Road junction and reach them up to Tipu Sultan Chowk straight from the Gokhale Bridge. The preliminary study has indicated that more than 70,000 vehicles ply on this route daily,” stated the MMRDA statement.

“However, if the inauguration programme takes place, these 70,000 and many more will suffer immensely on that day,” quipped Shelar.
