For the third time since last year, the Bombay high court has called upon the director general of police (DGP) to accelerate the search for a missing child.
In the case of Manpreet Biji, 30, who had filed a habeas corpus petition seeking the production of her son Guruashish, 3, the court has summoned senior police officer AN Roy, who currently holds additional charge as the DGP, to the court on Thursday.
Guruashish was allegedly kidnapped by his father and Manpreet’s estranged husband, Nanaksingh Biji, in January 2008.
“We want the child now,” justice Ranjana Desai said. Referring to the case of Ulhasnagar-resident Preeti Chugh whose husband had gone missing with her 4-year-old son, justice Desai said, “Last time when the DGP was called, the child was found in just a few days.”
Roy’s predecessor, SS Virk, was summoned by the court in August last year to trace Chugh’s son Sujal who had been missing for nine months. After Virk was roped in, the child was found within 10 days. “It will be good if we call the DGP,” the court said.
After this feat, Virk’s assistance was also sought by the court to trace a three-day old baby boy stolen from Sion Hospital in January 2009. However, that child has not yet been found.
In the last hearing of this case, the court had given the CBI an earful for its inability to trace Biji’s child for two years. The CBI has, however, been submitting confidential probe reports to the court.
“This is not a matrimonial dispute. It is a criminal case,” justice Desai said. The judges will speak to Roy about the matter at length in their chambers on Thursday, they indicated.
“There has been no progress in finding my son so far. Hopefully, things will change when the DGP looks into the case,” Manpreet
told DNA.
