Taking serious view of the allegation that the Nashik police have threatened an undertrial student who was handcuffed and made to write his examination, the Bombay High Court has said the police would face action if the allegation was true.
A division bench of Justice SA Bobade and Justice RD Dhanuka was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the NGO Criminal Justice Initiative against the handcuffing of undertrials while being escorted from jail to courts.
Gayatri Singh, the advocatefor the NGO, told the court on Thursday that certain police personnel had met one of the students and forcibly taken his statement stating that he had not been handcuffed.
“When we are seized of the matter, such interference would amount to serious consequences,” justice Bobade said. The court has directed the student to file an affidavit on February 21.
