Mumbai: In order to facilitate traffic movement on the Bandra Worli Sea Link, the BMC and the traffic authorities have decided to shift the existing median divider at the Lala Lajpatrai Road at Worli lane eastwards.
The decision was taken at a meeting of senior civic officials and traffic authorities at the civic headquarters on Wednesday.

The move will provide an additional lane for the northward-bound traffic at the Bandra Worli Sea Link. In order to avoid congestion of the traffic at the Haji Ali junction owing to the southward bound traffic emerging out of the BWSL, the traffic authorities have decided to divert vehicluar movement from South Mumbai coming towards Mahalaxmi and Tardeo. The vehicles are now required to drive upto Lala Lajpatrai Road at Worli and then take a U-turn from there to access these destinations. Civic officials said that the median divider was required to be shifted to facilitate the U-turn movement. A senior civic official told DNA that the work was likely to be taken up in a day or two.

The Lala Lajpatrai Road, as it exists today, has six-lanes going southwards and four lanes nothwards. The shifting of the divider will mean an additional lane for northward bound traffic.

The civic and traffic authorities are also exploring the option of setting up car-decks, light load bridges on which car can traverse, across three junctions including the Haji Ali junction, the Love Grove junction, and the Bandstand junction near Chowpatty, for disbursal of southward bound traffic from BWSL.

The move will also mean that 637 casurina trees planted along the median will be axed.

Civic authorities said it had been decided to replant the same number of trees at the race course to compensate for the loss.
