A 15-year-old girl in Andheri allegedly hanged herself as she had reportedly lied to her guardians about appearing for an examination.

The victim, Meghana Thakur, a Class 9 student of Gurunanak school in Andheri (East), stayed with her uncle’s family , since her parents are based in the extended suburbs of Virar.

Sources said Meghana had two exams on January 24. But due to pain in her ears, she arrived late at the exam hall and missed one of the exams. However, when her uncle asked her about it, she said that she had appeared for both exams.

On January 29, everyone from Meghana’s family had gone to celebrate her cousin’s birthday. Later, when her relatives could not find her at the party, it was learnt that she had returned home.

When Meghana did not open the door for her family, the door was opened with a spare key. She committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling, said her uncle Pramod Naik.

Police officials privy to the investigation said that the girl was declared dead before admission. “Further investigation is on in the case,” said a senior police officer.

Sources said that a suicide note was recovered from the home, in which she mentioned that she was upset as she had lied about the examination to her uncle. She also thanked another teacher for letting her appear in the second paper.
