The wife of police sub-inspector Dinanath Shinde, who died at 40 after being knocked down by stylist Nooriya Haveliwala's car, is shocked over the way her husband was killed. “How can a woman drive like that, killing my husband so brutally?” asks Devyani, sobbing uncontrollably. She says she can't wait for Nooriya to get punished. “I want my husband's murderer to get a harsh punishment. He was working to save others by stopping them from drinking and driving. But he himself became the victim of one of those he wanted to save,” said an inconsolable Devyani.

Shinde's 12-year-old son, who couldn't believe that his father was no more, was in a state of shock too. “Who is going to look after my family now?” asked Devyani Shinde.

The other victim of the incident, Afzal Maknejia, a 35-year-old hotelier, had gone to collect change for Rs2,000 from a milk centre owner near Bombay Hospital in South Mumbai, when he was hit by the speeding car as well, and died on the spot.

Siraj Qureshi, 45, owner of Cafe Mezbaan at Kurla (E) who knew Maknejia well, said: “Afzalbhai was running his hotel successfully for the past eight years. At around 10.30pm on Friday, he received a call from the milk centre owner who asked him to visit his shop and collect the change. He left with his colleague, Asif, on his motorcycle, at around 11pm.”

Qureshi said that at about 12.45am, he received a call from Asif, who told him that a speeding car had hit Afzal at Mahrshi Karve Road, while he was showing his driving licence and other documents to the police during a routine nakabandi. The seriously-injured Afzal was rushed to GT Hospital, where he was declared dead before admission. Asif, however, was unhurt.

Afzal used to live with his wife, four-year-old son (who is studying in junior KG at a local English school) and widowed mother at Brahmanwadi in Kurla (E). Afzal's wife, son and mother were at a relative's place in Mira Road when the incident took place. After the post mortem, Afzal's body was taken to Mira Road, where the last rites were performed, Qureshi said, adding that Afzal's hotel would remain closed on Saturday, in a gesture of mourning.
