Deeply committed to the environment, 13-year-old Viraj Gupchoop, a student of Jnanaprabodhini High School in Nigdi, has set an example by recycling water from the bathtub and kitchen sink to grow organic fruits and vegetables in his terrace garden.

Viraj has successfully grown pumpkins, potatoes, sweet potatoes, turmeric, melons, bitter gourds, moong, tomatoes, chillies, lemon and papai. He has also grown marigold flowers in his 100-square-foot balcony and 10x8-foot terrace at his residence in Chinchwadgaon, near Morya Gosawi temple.

"I was so excited when we harvested 10 kg of sweet potatoes last Sunday. The biggest one among them was 2-foot long and weighed 2 kg. We distributed it among our neighbours also," an excited Viraj said.

Considering the quantum of adulteration, extensive and harmful use of chemical fertilizers and recent incidences of use of harmful booster doses to various crops and fruits for unethical profits, Viraj decided to go ahead with composting household waste and recycling water for his small garden. His parents offered him their full support in his initiatives.

Viraj's father Dinesh Gupchoop said, "On the occasion of Dassara, we plucked almost a bag full of marigold flowers and 7 kg tomatoes. We made garlands with the flowers to decorate the whole house."

The most important part is he never bought any seeds for the purpose. "All the plants have been developed after sorting out the waste from vegetables bought for daily use at home," added Viraj.

Viraj uses spare time for his 'farm'. He wants to pursue a career in bio-technology.
