Green activists from schools all over the country will present about 70 environment projects at a meeting being held in the city by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to mark its golden jubilee year. Over 100 students between 14 and 17 years of age will come together at the Bharati Vidyapeeth from
February 15 to 18.

Bharati Vidyapeeth’s Institute of Environment Education and Research will be the local host. The NCERT has shortlisted 70 various projects made by the students from all the states in the country for the meet. The selection was made from the lists of students forwarded by the respective states. The NCERT had given criteria to all states about selection of students, who had done environment projects from all government,  non-government, aided and non-aided schools. Five to 10 projects were submitted to the NCERT by each state.

The participants include two students from Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium High School. About 15 students from the state have been selected.

“We had decided to choose 50-55 projects but ended up selecting 70 which are all very good. There is enough awareness among youngsters about the environment. We need to sustain this awareness by promoting them to act and do something about environmental problems. That is what we are aiming at through this meet,’’ said coordinator of the meet from NCERT, New Delhi, Jayashree Sharma. The meet will provide a platform to the students to come together and share their ideas and understand
environmental problems.

During the three-day event, the students and teachers from various states will undergo training to learn how to collect data scientifically and analyse and interpret it. They will also have a tour to forest areas like Mulshi and Katraj. Field visits will also expose them to various environment conservation projects.

The NCERT is serious about taking this project forward and see if they can make it an annual event. Sharma told DNA, “The meet is a part of the golden jubilee initiative. We wanted to bring these children together to enhance their awareness and knowledge about locally relevant issues. We are also going to study the outcomes of the meet so that we learn from it and plan better next time. The NCERT may hold such an event annually.’’

She made it clear that it was not a competition and added the NCERT was thinking of holding state-level competitions and then organising the national meet next year or year after.

“It is all on the list and we may finalise things only after this meet in Pune. This time, we just gave criteria to the state and they forwarded the list. We may hold state-level meets and competitions and then select the students for the national meet next time. Let us see how things work,’’ she added.
